General Information

PMI Project Management Professional (PMP)® Certification

The Project Management Professional (PMP)® is globally the most important industry-recognized certification for project managers.

You can find PMP’s leading projects in nearly every country and, unlike other certifications that focus on a particular geography or domain, the PMP® is truly global. As a PMP, you can work in virtually any industry, with any methodology and in any location.

The PMP can also provide a significant advantage when it comes to salary and earning potential. Among survey respondents to PMI’s Earning Power Salary Survey, those with a PMP certification garner a higher salary (20% higher on average) than those without a PMP certification.

Employers benefit as well. When more than one-third of their project managers are PMP-certified, organizations complete more of their projects on time, on budget and meeting original goals. (Pulse of the Profession® study, PMI, 2015.)

The PMP signifies that you speak and understand the global language of project management and connects you to a community of professionals, organizations and experts worldwide. Become a PMP and become a project hero!

Before we get to our tried and true 5 step plan here is an insert due to the current situation.

As you may already know, PMI has changed the PMP exam in several areas at the beginning of 2021.
And not only the PMP exam itself but also some things regarding the infrastructure around the exam.

This led to confusion for many interested parties, as suddenly many did not know how and what exactly they should prepare for the exam.

In the following, I describe a possible strategy that tries to take into account all those concerned.

Our 5 step plan has already been updated accordingly and therefore remains valid.

But now to the proposed strategy in the current situation:

What to do right after
the PMI Exam Changes?

✪ Proposal for PMP exam preparation strategy in the current situation ✪

Due to the immense demand - for understandable reasons - regarding the best approach to prepare for the exam, I will formulate a recommended strategy from my point of view.

So, from my point of view, there are currently (Beginning of 2021) two types of PMP aspirants:

1. those of you who had already prepared for the old version and for whatever reason didn't make it in the last year.

and

2. all others who are now freshly aiming for the PMP.

I will say something about both types.

So if you use your existing materials and add the Agile Practice Guide as sources for preparation and then use an updated simulator for extensive practice, you should be on the safe side.

As a simulator, I STRONGLY recommend the PM Exam Simulator:

Another great Option to bridge your knowledge gap regarding the agile/hybrid aspects of the new Exam could be the so called:

The PMP Exam 2021 Booster Course

What will the Booster Course do for me?

This booster course aims to close the gap in your knowledge by offering lessons covering the above topics. Examples include the role and competencies of the project manager, benefits realization, managing project knowledge, agile and hybrid project management approaches, some agile-specific topics, and more.

What's Included?

The booster course includes the following:

  • 2021 Booster Study Checklist (xls)
  • Formula Study Guide (pdf)
  • Audit eBook
  • Weekly Exam Tips Newsletter
  • Discussion forum access
  • 15 PM PrepCast video lessons (5 hours)
  • 29 Agile PrepCast video lessons (11 hours)
  • 5 Expert audio interviews (3 hours)

Your access to the booster course is for 1 year from the date of purchase. This offer will be available til end of February 2021:

For those of you, who start now, the whole thing looks slightly different; you have basically two options between which you have to decide:

1. preparation through an officially authorized training partner (ATP)

OR

2. preparation in self-learning mode and, if necessary, with the use of non-authorized courses/materials.

Ok, after the many changes that PMI made last year also in the area of authorized training providers, from now on, only the so-called ATPs are allowed to work with the material officially provided centrally by PMI and to conduct official PMP preparation courses.

To be more precise, the ATPs must even use this material and may only supplement it with their own material.

So if you want a PMI-compliant preparation, find your favorite ATP (there is a list on pmi.org) and book a course there. Usually, this will be a five-day full-time course with a (virtual) live instructor.

Besides the course, you will receive the official PMI students manual (so to speak, the official Prep Book) and additional material, which may vary from ATP to ATP.

The most significant disadvantage of this option will usually be the cost because such courses are not cheap (usually between 1500$ and 2000$).

Of course, I have a recommendation for this as well, namely the following; with this established provider, after all, the best PMP simulator, in my opinion, is included in the price (and much more ...) :

✪ 𝗣𝗠𝗣 𝗘𝘅𝗮𝗺 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 With PMI's Official ATP Course (online) ✪

That's well over $3,000 in value - you'll be amazed at how affordable you can have it all:

Now to the Self Learning Option

The PMI has deliberately made this option much more difficult because ATPs are no longer allowed to offer self-learning video courses (like, e.g., the PMPrepCast)!

The only official on-demand prep course is the one from PMI itself, and it's $699, so not exactly affordable for most either.

Of course, many providers (NOT ATPs!) will continue to sell their courses. Still, these are not authorized (and, as far as I know, are no longer allowed to be offered as PMP preparation courses) and therefore not structured according to the new an dofficial PMI guidelines.

The situation is similar to the so-called Prep Books available so far, such as the well-known Rita's.

Even the recently published and, according to their statement, updated version for the new exam is aligned according to the known PMBoK Guide structure (i.e., KAs and Processes), which no longer corresponds to the format provided by PMI, which I have roughly sketched in this article (see graphic)! >>>

✪ The 5 MAJOR PMP® Exam Changes – and what you should do! [UPDATED] ✪

5 Major PMP Changes

What does all this mean for those who want to rely on the Self Learning Method?

Good question! My recommendation at the moment would be to wait, if possible, for another 2 or 3 months until things have been clarified and solidified a bit more and a few more experience reports from the new exam are available.

If you can't or don't want to wait, I would recommend the following for now:

PMBoK Guide 6 and the Agile Practice Guide as references (mandatory).

Optionally, perhaps another book from the reference list, such as the Wysocki and/or the Scrum Guide.

A good Prep Book: If you don't have one yet, you should go back to one of the updated versions.

However, if you already have a good one, such as Rita's 9th Edition or the book by Joseph Philips, you can stick with it.

For someone who already owns Riat's 9th Edition, for example, the new 10th Edition investment does not make much sense, in my view. You may refer to this article >>>

✪ The Books You Need to Pass The NEW PMP® Certification Exam! [2021 Version]✪

Books

Then, in my view, a good, updated simulator is also mandatory! My recommendation for this was already above.

A supplementary on-demand course such as that of Joseph Philips can also be helpful, but it would not be a must, I think.
A good example is this one:

PMP Certification Exam Preparation by Joseph Philips

And then, as a self-learner, you should, in any case, look for one or more learning partners or a group to discuss and clarify questions and open points.

So much for the current situation and what I would advise at the moment.

Regards,

Markus

Here are the steps how to:

List of Steps

Step 2: Get started with your PMP® certification preparation.  - Make a plan!  - Read the PMBoK Guide, the Agile Practice Guide and a good PMP preparation book (in companion) and use other recommended resources:

STEP 2.1: Make a plan (or use ours!)

Enroll in our “ULTIMATE Roadmap to your PMP Exam SUCCESS!"

As an alternative to create your own study plan, why not using ours! We have created a guidance program which will guide you through the complete preparation process in a well structured and professional way - Step-by-Step!

This works like your very own study plan. And the best – it is completely FREE! No cost and no risk for you. You can start and cancel at any time.

To join just click on the Image above.

STEP 2.2: Get the PMBoK Guide, the Agile Practice Guide + a good prep book (at least one) and work through them thoroughly

  • PMBoK Guide  itself – As a PMI member you will have access to a digital and personalized version of the current PMBoK Guide version. Otherwise you need to buy a paper based version.
  • Agile Practice Guide  – As a PMI member you will have access to a digital and personalized version of the current Agile Practice Guide version. Otherwise you need to buy a paper based version.

For further Information about those books, the complete official reference List by PMI and the recommended PMP preparation books please headover to this article here:

STEP 2.3: Choose additional prep material and Resources based on your personal learning preferences and behaviors

There are tons of resources available out there. Don’t get confused and mislead about it. Think about your personal learning preferences and choose the material that fits to them. Do not choose too many resources and get overwhelmed! Sometimes more is less.

Step 3: Took a PMP® preparation course and get you’re required 35 contact hours of PM training.

You should already read about it here (refer to step 1 of this 5 step guide):

  • PMP® Requirements – 35 contact hours  (☛  The Complete Guide to PMP 35 Contact Hours of Project Management Education )

Since PMI changes their ATP - Program ("Authorized Training Partners"; formerly known as R.E.P. - Registered Education Providers), they do not longer allow third party instituitons to offer pre-recorded and self-directed online courses.

Therefore you need to find an A.T.P you do trust and take their offer for a live-instructor led PMP prep course.

Our #1 recommendation therefore is:

✪ 𝗣𝗠𝗣 𝗘𝘅𝗮𝗺 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 With PMI's Official ATP Course (online) ✪

Step 4: Finalize your preparation: Utilize a professional online Exam simulator. Analyze and enhance your results. Use flashcards and study tables, review your notes from class and take lots of practice exams.

Practice, practice, practice – practice is the key!

We can’t underline that more! And we would recommend NOT ONLY doing as much sample questions as you can, cause practice is the key!

Furthermore you should go for really SIMULATING the exam. It is not an easy job to do 180 (more or less difficult) Questions in a time frame of 230 Minutes. Those almost 4 Hours could get really long and/or you could run out of time in case you will hang on to long to one very difficult/complex question for instance. So, you should train your time management for the exam also, right?

You can do so with those tons of free sample question available on the internet, but in our experience, a professional tool which provides you exactly the exam circumstances, is much better for this. Yes, it may take an invest, but from our point of view and our experience this is priceless.

We would like to recommend you the exam simulator by Cornelius Fichtner, which provides you

✪ over 2.000 high quality PMP questions and which gives you

✪ high flexibility in how to train your questions up to max

✪ 5 fully loaded and timed exam simulations, each with 180 individual questions,

PLUS

✪ separate Quizpool with over 1.100 sample questions
